Tegus
Diet
Tegus are typically omnivores. They feed on crickets, roaches, meal worms, and wax worms. They should be offered fruits regularly. They also eat rodents and should be offered them sparingly. Rats are high in fat and tegus are not designed to digest large quantities of fur. My tegus eat mainly rodents and crickets. The acceptance of fruit varies from animal to animal and my tegus simply will not eat fruits. Tegus grow quickly and have a high metabolism so they should be fed frequently. There is no specific amount or time to feed you tegu. Every lizard is different and should be fed a moderate amount. You do not want to over feed your animal because it can easily become over weight.
Habitat
Tegus are native to South America and typically inhabit forest-edge savannahs and adjacent rain forests of Argentina and parts of Brazil and Uruguay. They burrow in the ground to keep safe from predators and high temperatures. My smaller tegus are in a 55 gallon tank with sand, a heat lamp, heating pad, and a UVB lamp. The larger tegu, John Redcorn, is in a custom tank made out of plexiglass and wood. The tank is about five feet long and four feet wide. The top is made out of a door that was cut down to the right size and attached with hinges. He also has a heat lamp and UVB lamp and heating pad. I use corn bedding for him because he gets so dirty. Tegus get about 3-5 feet long so their enclosure should be fairly large.
